The U.S. Isn’t the Light in the Darkness Anymore
There was a time when people who were tortured held out some hope that the torture would be exposed and the United States would step in and stop it. Not anymore.
We not only let ourselves down when we condoned torture, but we let people around the world down. They have no one to turn to now.
Act Up!
Glad to see that civil disobedience isn’t entirely dead here in the U.S.
I was beginning to wonder.
The GOP Has Gone Insane
Good article about that here.
Let me get this straight. The woman QUITS because of ETHICS complaints filed against her by her CONSTITUENTS and that makes her MORE Presidential?
I knew the GOP was in bad shape but this is absolutely unbelievable.
Palin’s Lies Upon Lies Upon Lies
The Plum Line is digging into Palin’s “dissembling.”
I Hope This Catches Like Wildfire
The central New South Wales (Australia) community of Bundanoon has voted overwhelmingly in favour of a ban on bottled water.
Hate Niggers Muslims Guns Abortion Obama Constitution Free Liberty Palin
Oh, and Fox “News.”
Testing. One, two, three.
On winger watch.
Alaska on Fire
I don’t think of Alaska as dry enough to catch on fire but obviously I don’t know what I’m talking about. There are 70 active wildfires burning there as we speak.
Can Sarah Palin can see the global warming from her window?
Who Quit or Got Fired? David Letterman or Sarah Palin?
Just sayin’ — in response to the now apparently dead fire David Letterman crowd — which was doing this dance — literally — just 30 days ago:
Karma Comes Calling on George W. Bush
Word is that the Dallas Police Department has cut extra protection to George W. Bush’s baby George’s home in “Preston Hollow” (must be named after his grandpa).
Nothing could be sweeter than to see that bastard suffer some, albeit small, consequence as a result of the economic collapse he had a hand in creating:
‘We just had to cut it,’ said one police official, who agreed to speak on the condition on anonymity. ‘We’re about to layoff people.’
Last Week – Networks Devoted 30% Coverage to Michael Jackson
So says the Columbia Journalism Review’s Kicker blog. The cable stations supposedly spent 28% of their airtime on him, which I think is low. I obviously didn’t watch all the cable channels all week long last week but from what I did see — primarily on Fox, CNN and MSNBC — it was more like 70% Jackson coverage.
Gotta Love Rachel Maddow
Go to her site and you can upload a ringtone of her saying “I’m gay.“
Her honesty and self-confidence are so refreshing.

Rupert Murdoch: One of the Most Despicable Human Beings on the Planet
The latest: Murdoch papers paid £1 million to gag phone-hacking victims.
Money quote:
Rupert Murdoch’s News Group newspapers has paid out more than £1m to settle legal cases that threatened to reveal evidence of his journalists’ repeated involvement in the use of criminal methods to get stories.
Doesn’t exactly fit the image Murdoch projects through Fox News now does it? You know, “lookin’ out for the folks,” honest, patriotic, God-fearin’.

Maybe Tucker Carlson Should be Palin’s VP
He seems to agree with her convoluted understanding of our democracy.
A Must-Read About the Washington Post Pay-to-Play Scandal
Thomas -What’s the Matter with Kansas – Frank has a dead on op-ed in the Wall Street Journal today about the Washington Post pay-to-play scandal.
Money quote:
In such a ham-handed manner, too. When the leading newspaper of the capital city of the world’s most powerful country decides to turn influence-peddler, is this the best it can do? An advertisement that reads as though it were promoting expensive scotch? (“Bringing together those powerful few.”) Not even favorite Post targets like Jack Abramoff stooped to that.
Even worse were the lame excuses offered by the paper’s brass, who blamed one another after the embarrassing story broke and immediately cancelled the get-together. The flier hadn’t been properly “vetted,” they said. Ms. Weymouth had been out of town. Plus assorted other feeble explanations.
During the Watergate era, I had tremendous respect for the Washington Post. Now I have none.
The First of the Michael Jackson Gold Diggers
Yesterday, before Michael Jackson’s body was put in the ground, a book by Ian Halperin titled, “Unmasked: The Final Years of Michael Jackson” was shipped to distributors. It will go on sale July 14.
Cable “News” Channels
I have stopped thinking of the 24/7 cable “news” channels as a place to go for news.
My news has come from many sources lo these past years but cable “news” is now officially off my list.
Why? They don’t carry news! which happens to be the reason I turn to a news channel to begin with.
Qwest “High Speed” Internet Service Crashing — Again — More Tomorrow
I hope (fingers crossed).
Garden Fresh? Melt in Your Mouth?
Sick of seeing phrases like those — how dumb do they think we are? – on menus? You’re not alone.
Today Show Reporter Asks Dumbest Question Ever Asked on Television
This morning, Kerry Sanders of “The Today Show” asked “Bubbles” the chimpanzee’s caretaker whether “Bubbles” knows Michael Jackson is dead. (The caretaker said she hasn’t “discussed it with him.”)
Unbelievable.
Fascism at Yankee Stadium
Last August police at Yankee Stadium in New York City actually arrested and ejected a guy who was using the restroom during the playing of God Bless America.
NYC has agreed to settle out of court for $10,001 plus attorney fees.
The Wall Street Journal Tries to be Cool
The Wall Street Journal is live-blogging Michael Jackson’s funeral.
The Many Lies of Sarah Palin
Andrew Sullivan had one of his interns (oh, to have interns!) put together a list of the many lies of Sarah Palin. When you have 20 minutes, take a look. There’s something supremely arrogant, or foolish, or bizarre (or all of the above) about a person who tells lies — on the national stage no less — that are almost immediately disprovable.
Fox News – No Class
Both CNN and MSNBC dropped the scrolls and the flashing graphics during their broadcast of Michael Jackson’s funeral. Not not so the tacky, classless Fox “News.”
John McCain
After watching Palin’s ah, press conference or whatever it was last Friday and this morning, some interviews she gave to the MSM in her fishing garb, I’m all the more appalled at John McCain for thinking Sarah Palin was qualified to be the President of the United States of America.
My God.
The “Department of Law” at the White House?
Sarah Palin told an ABC interviewer yesterday that,
if she went for national office, Palin told Snow she’s confident that the “department of law at the White House” would protect her from baseless allegations.
My God. There is no “department of law” at the White House Sarah!
See You On the Other Side of Michael Jackson Day
The U.S. “news” media will come to a halt tomorrow. There will be no news other than Michael Jackson’s funeral.
See you on the other side.
Where Did Sahel Kazem Get her Gun?
All signs point to Steve McNair’s “girlfriend,” Sahel Kazem, as his killer. She was 20 years old:
Kazemi was too young, under federal law to buy a handgun from a registered dealer. The law requires purchasers to be 21, the same age required for a permit to carry in Tennessee.
Immediate thoughts: Guns on campus. Guns in church. Guns in bars. Laws? Terrorists? Guns in cars. Freedom? Guns in your pocket. Safe?
