Larry King Pulls Dan Quayle Out of the Dust Bin to Talk About Ted Kennedy

Someone should help ol’ Larry update his Rolodex mimeograph machine.

Hey, Let’s Talk About Rush Limbaugh’s Penis

The smaller the penis the bigger the gun or the car or the mic or whatever.

You get my drift.

GOPers Think There’s No News But Fox News

The GOPers are SO showing their racist colors these days (see below).  The latest?  An Idaho gubernatorial candidate who said “he’d buy a license to hunt President Barack Obama.”

I swear.  They think everyone listens to Fox “News” and Rush Limbaugh and that everyone will cheer and applaud this kind of talk.  They’re living in a bubble that I hope will be their undoing.

Thousands in Line to Pay Tribute to Ted Kennedy

I’m watching C-SPAN’s silent coverage (thank you C-SPAN!) of people passing by Ted Kennedy’s coffin at the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston.  They just put up a graphic saying that as of 7:44 p.m. ET, 12,000 people are in line.

You can be sure you won’t hear that stat on Fox.  They want you to think that the people who identify with Kennedy’s politics are a tiny, irritating, pesky little group of militants who’ve somehow managed to move into the White House and who are thwarting the will of the vast, vast majority of Americans.

Blogging While Ambivalent

Watched at lot of the live coverage of the goings on with the Kennedys today.  Feel very sad but also notice that after a heavy day of blogging like I had yesterday, I feel burned out and unable to do it again the next day.

Still detoxing from News Hounds I guess though it’s taking longer than I thought it would.

Bought and Sold Blue Dogs

Good article here about how much money insurance and related industries have donated to the Blue Dog Democrats who are holding up health care reform.

As the Obama administration and Democrats wrangled over the timing, shape and cost of health care overhaul efforts during the first half of the year, more than half the $1.1 million in campaign contributions the Democratic Party‘s Blue Dog Coalition received came from the pharmaceutical, health care and health insurance industries, according to watchdog organizations.

Electing a Black Man

I’m glad Ted Kennedy lived long enough to see a black man elected president.

I’m glad I did too.

Let’s Have Wall-to-Wall Ted Kennedy Funeral Coverage

When Ronald Reagan died we saw wall-to-wall coverage that remade history.  We didn’t hear about recessions or PATCO.  We heard about Reagan as God!

Surely the “liberal media”  — got that?  the LIBERAL media — will do the same for Ted Kennedy.

I’ll be watching.

Some Flags in Texas Not Being Lowered to Half-Staff for Kennedy?

I listened to Thom Hartmann’s show today.  A man from Dallas, Texas called in and reported that some flags there have not been lowered to half-staff in honor of Ted Kennedy, as directed by President Obama.

Obviously, I can’t verify that claim but it sure sounds like something Texas would do.

Since When Are Americans So Poor They Put Pens and Pencils on Layaway?

The rich are getting richer and the rest of us are putting the pens and pencils our children need in order to function at school on layaway.  This is pitiful.  We’re supposedly the “richest nation on earth,” right?

Meanwhile, we’re saying “no” to a public option for health care?  Finally, FINALLY, the government’s thinking about us — US — YOU AND ME — the very people who’re putting pens and pencils on layaway but, we’re bucking it?

We.  Are.  Going.  Crazy.

Fox “News” Says Obama Wants to Obliterate 9/11

Go to Fox Nation and you’ll see this headline:

11 8-25

Click on the blue box and you’ll get this:

Obama 8-25

Click on “Read the Full Article” line in the lower left, and you’re sent here, to the American Spectator.  It then claims that Obama’s proclamation that 9/11 could be honored by using it as a “national day of service” (what a great idea, huh?) is what’s “changing the 9/11 anniversary.”

My God.  These people are insane.

Poor John McCain? He Got Booed?

You probably heard that John McCain was booed today during a health care town hall when he defended President Obama’s support of, and belief in, the Constitution.  The majority of the people in attendance thought he was full of shit.

Many of the media accounts of this event include a whiff of pity for poor John, the honorable, good-guy patriot who found himself in a situation that allegedly caught him off guard.

Excuse me?  What a load’o crap.  When McCain picked Sarah Palin as his VP he lit a match.  Then he stood by, passively, while she whipped last fall’s campaign crowds into a frenzy about the traitor/terrorist Obama he let it burn.  The likes of Fox and Beck and Hannity of course, took it and ran but John McCain, a guy we’re supposed to believe loves his country, did nothing to stop the hate.

His reckless, selfish nomination of Palin was a major driver in getting us to where we are today.  He deserves our scorn, not our pity.

Need Help w/Health Care? Go Door-to-Door. Maybe Your Neighbors Will Help

Yesterday Oklahoma Republican Senator Tom Coburn held a health care town hall meeting.  A woman who was obviously at the wits end of her wits end, said she needed help.  Her husband had a traumatic brain injury and his insurance “would not cover him to eat and drink.”  She said he left a nursing home with a feeding tube but she wasn’t equiped to take it from there.  Coburn said he’d try to help her through his office but then went on:

The other thing that’s missing in this debate is us as neighbors.  Ah, people that need our help.  The idea that the government is the solution to our problems is an inaccurate, a very inaccurate statement.

Watch:

In other words:  You’re on your own lady!

Does a heart beat inside these guys?

Join Color of Change

Ever since Color of Change launched its campaign against Glenn Beck for his hateful race-baiting, I’ve been meaning to join.  It kept slipping my mind until just now, when I came across this, which reminded me to do it.  So I did.

I Survived a Death Panel

In late June my husband ended up in the ER after falling and splitting his head open.  They wanted to know if he had a living will (he does).  I had surgery in 2001 and in 2005.  Both times they asked me if I had a living will (I did).

We drew up living wills and power of attorneys years ago.  We did it with each other in mind so if that awful time came when one of us had to make end-of-life decisions for the other, our wishes would be right there, on paper, for all to see.

My mother went one step further.  She had a bad heart condition.  She had those documents too (as did my father*) but she went so far as to get a Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) order.  She died in her sleep at age 80 at an assisted living center.  She was found by a maid who had come to clean her room.  The police were called but, because of the DNR, an ambulance wasn’t.  Had she not had a DNR (it was taped to the back of her front door), an ambulance would have been called and she would have been taken to the hospital where they would have tried to resuscitate her.  God forbid.  Had they succeeded, she would have been a vegetable, having been deprived of oxygen for as long as she was.  She would have hated that and, had she lived for years afterward, the whole family could potentially have gone bankrupt keeping what was left of her alive, which would have infuriated her.

That DNR, a document the “death panel” might talk to you about, worked exactly the way she hoped it would.

*  My father died of cancer and his living will stated that he not to be given food or water to extend his life if he became terminally ill.  He ate and drank for as long as he could but when he lapsed into a coma roughly two days before he died, we didn’t hook him up to IV’s to pump him full of nourishment.  He didn’t want his death prolonged by a few days and I’m sure if he had it to do over again he’d do it exactly the same way.  He was in a lot of pain and ready to go.  Without a living will the doctor may have insisted on doing “everything humanly possible” to keep him alive just a wee bit longer, which, given how he was suffering, would have been anything but humane.  It would have been cruel. That living will he’d drafted years earlier was invaluable then.

Think about these things.  Discuss them with your doctor and lawyer — what the wingers have scared everyone with by calling it a “death panel” — is something we all should do.  Drafting these documents is an act of love; a gift that you give to yourself and to your family.

Colorado Democratic Party Headquarters Vandalized

Pat Waak, the Chairwoman of the Colorado Democratic Party was on the Jay Marvin Show (with David Sirota subbing for Marvin) just now telling the audience that in the early morning hours today, eleven windows at the Colorado Democratic Party headquarters were smashed, apparently with a hammer or bat (no rocks or bricks were found).  No details yet as to whether this was random vandalism or a targeted hit but the police do have someone in custody.

I’ll keep you posted.
