People – Don’t Waste Your Money on this HSN Junk

Look at this watch that the Home Shopping Network is hawking tonight.

HSN Watch #1

They’re selling it for $159.95.  The only “real” thing about it is the leather strap and the stainless steel case.  But what gets me is that you can’t see the numbers on the face, so why bother?

And then there’s this gem at a mere $134.00.

HSN Watch #2

Can you imagine actually wearing that?  Think about how the “ears” of that creature — is it an elephant? — will catch on your clothes?  OMG.  Where they come up with this junk is beyond me.

We buy this crap but once we get it home and have it for a week or two we wonder what the hell we were  thinking. And then it’s on to renting one of those “Pods” that sits in our driveway and drives our neighbors nuts — they’re so ugly — so we have room to buy more junk.

Before we know it  we’re talking about credit card debt and foreclosures and, well, you get my drift.

It’s crazy.  Don’t buy it!

Why CNN is Bombing

Historically, CNN has done very well when it comes to live events.  Not last night.  Last night it came in 4th in the cable news ratings behind Fox, MSNBC and HLN.

This is really is shocking, and I’m not trying to be dramatic.

15 years ago, CNN was an icon.  It reported actual news — both national and international.  It reported interesting, important, relevant and timely stories from around the globe.  It was ready and able to report “breaking news” from anywhere.  It was exciting to watch. (Don’t forget — this was before the Internet.)

However, over time, it dumbed-down and shrank.  It pulled correspondents from important locals like China and Russia and it lazily began repeating a loop of six or seven stories over and over all day long.  Over time, serious news junkies stopped watching and they turned to the Internet.

Add bimbo news readers (of both sexes) masquerading as Serious People and  “fair and balanced” panels consisting of 3 conservatives to every one progressive.  Over time, viewers of a more liberal bent turned to MSNBC and conservatives turned to Fox.

It ain’t all that complicated.

Where CNN goes from here is anyone’s guess.  Judging from its coverage of yesterday’s elections, I think it’s going to try to compete with Fox (in which case it will lose because Fox already has a lock on that demographic).  All I heard during the five or six minutes I watched today was this talking point it must have received from the GOP:  “Republican sweep,”  “Republican sweep,”  “Republican sweep.”

There was a time when CNN was better than that.

Anonymous GOP House Member Calls Michele Bachmann “Crazy”

In an article at Politico, about a highly placed aide to Michele Bachmann announcing her resignation, “a conservative House member” is quoted as saying, “When your captain’s crazy, it’s time to find a new ship.”

The war within the GOP continues.

Here We Go: The Tea Party People Target Carly Fiorina

Hours ago Carly Fiorina announced that she is entering the GOP race for Barbara Boxers senate seat.  Almost simultaneously, the Tea Party launched an attack.  They favor the more conservative Chuck DeVore, who is already in the running.

We’re a Bunch of Fat Slobs

A whole bunch of young people in the U.S. — age 17 to 24 — are too fat and out of shape to serve in the military:

According to the latest Pentagon figures, a full 35 percent, or more than one-third, of the roughly 31.2 million Americans aged 17 to 24 are unqualified for military service because of physical and medical issues. And, said Curt Gilroy, the Pentagon’s director of accessions, “the major component of this is obesity. We have an obesity crisis in the country. There’s no question about it.”

[...]

In 1987, according to the CDC, a mere 6 percent of 18- to 34-year-olds, or about 1 out of 20, were obese. In 2008, 22 years later, 23 percent of that age group — almost 1 out of 4 — was considered to be obese.

That last sentence there is just stunning.

Convervatives Rework the Spin

Here’s a fascinating, firsthand account of what happened on the ground in NY-23 last night.

The Republicans were so sure they were going to win:

“Hoffman is likely to win,” said Bill Kristol, the editor of the Weekly Standard, during a Monday appearance on Fox News. “This is a classic swing congressional district. If a conservative Republican can win in this district with all the disadvantages of the chaos on the Republican side and the official Republican candidate pulling out and endorsing the Democrat, what does that say to the moderate Democrats in the House?” As late as 10:13 on Tuesday night, the National Review writer Victor Davis Hanson referred to the Democrats’ “three andidates” who looked like they would go down to defeat in a referendum on Barack Obama. Two were defeated–one, Bill Owens, was not.

Sign me Up for the Tea Party

If the Tea Party movement means turning safe GOP seats over to the Democrats — as in NY-23 where a Democrat hadn’t won since 1871 — then I’m all for it.  Sign me up.

Will Sarah Palin Endorse Carly Fiorina?

Carly Fiorina, the former CEO of Hewlett-Packard, will announce later today that she will run on the Republican ticket for the U.S. senate seat held by Barbara Boxer of California.

Gee, I wonder if Sarah Palin will ah, bless Fiorina’s candidacy like she did Doug Hoffman’s.
