Paula Deen is on Huckabee

Paula Deen, America’s soft and fuzzy mom, who “asserts her family values ahead of her cooking values,” is on Huckabee tonight.  Huckabee is of course on Fox and Fox ain’t no friend of families, never mind their claim to be “lookin’ out for the folks.”  Fox stands in the vanguard, protecting all things corporate, so Deen is showing a lack of scruples along the lines of her endorsement of Smithfield meat products a few years ago:

It is a horrible place to work, even for the meatpacking industry: 5,500 employees work in an environment characterized by fear, threats, abuse, and bullying from management. Injuries have gone up by 200% since 2003. The National Labor Relations Board and a U.S. Court found that Smithfield engaged in intimidating, firing, unlawfully arresting, and even violently assaulting employees who wanted a voice on the job.

Is all that butter hindering Deen’s ability to think?  Then again, maybe all that money is, kinda like it is for Fox.

Amazing Images from Afghanistan

Here here are some absolutely amazing images of Afghanistan taken by photographer David Guttenfelder:

For the past seven years, David Guttenfelder has witnessed and documented the changing landscape of Afghanistan. Although mostly embedded with coalition troops, he has also covered the presidential elections, bodybuilders in Kabul, the state of Afghan prisons and daily life in the country. Guttenfelder is the chief Asia photographer for The Associated Press and over the past seven years has offered the general public a close-up, intimate look at the lives of troops fighting in the mountains and remote regions of Afghanistan.

Call it Burma, Not Myanmar

This morning there is a fair amount of talk on the news about Myanmar.  Myanmar was called Burma prior to 1962 when its civilian government was overthrown by a military coup.  It subsequently became a brutal dictatorship.

During a speech in Tokyo today, President Obama called for the, “release of all political prisoners” there, “including Aung San Suu Kyi, an end to conflicts with minority groups, and a genuine dialogue between the government, the democratic opposition and minority groups on a shared vision of the future.”  He also said, “That is how a government in Burma will be able to respond to the needs of its people.  That is the path that will bring Burma true security and prosperity.”

Note that Obama referred to the country as Burma, not Myanmar.  But our media calls it Myanmar, which I think is wrong.  The coup leaders renamed the country, so to call it that gives them legitimacy, respect and credibility. To show solidarity with the oppressed people there, we should call it Burma, and I applaud President Obama for doing that.

Ashleigh Banfield

On April 24, 2003,  Ashleigh Banfield, an articulate, energetic , vivacious and thoughtful reporter for the “liberal” MSNBC, spoke out against the media’s glorification of the war in Iraq..

Unfortunately, the MSM didn’t want us to know about this truth back then (anymore than they want us to know it now),  so she was fired.

Six years on, we hear rumors that she might be back — at ABC.

I hope so, and I hope she hasn’t changed.

I bought the hype and I bought a bottle of OxiClean “Max Force.”  It didn’t GET THE STAINS OUT! as the ad claims.
