Memo to Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) re Ben Bernanke

On Wednesday Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke will appear at a confirmation hearing before the Senate Banking Committee. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) said today that he won’t vote to re-confirm Bernanke unless the Fed is, “willing to take their eyes off an exclusive gaze on the welfare of Wall Street and start giving a red hot damn about the American public.”
Right the freakin’ on. And I would add that Bernanke expressing a willingness to take his eyes off Wall Street isn’t enough. He must promise to do so and Whitehouse must commit to making sure he does. And I’m not talkin’ years here. I’m talkin’ weeks, or, at the most, a few months.
