At the Food Bank

I spent the day at the food bank. 78 families came through between 9:20 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. “Normal” for that time period is about 26.
A local elementary school held a food drive this week and they brought in 800+ pounds of food and toiletries — half of what they collected. So nice. So nice too to have things like brownie mixes and flour and salad dressing and taco shells and soap and shampoo — which we don’t usually have. But man it’s chaotic getting the bags up off the floor and the contents onto the shelves. Fortunately we had eight volunteers today; we usually have three or four.
A special treat this time of years is giving out holiday “gift” bags (one per family per season) which contain a pie crust, canned pumpkin, etc. We even had roughly 20 sets of Christmas lights which someone donated.
The people who come through have so little. Their eyes literally light up — even the old peoples’ — when they get something special like Christmas lights.
It’s emotionally exhausting work in some ways but wonderful and rewarding and I love my co-volunteers.
