At another level, I know from working at the food bank that being poor is also about not being able to afford food. Being unable to afford food means you can’t afford a car. If you can’t afford a car you take the bus or you ride a bike. But you can’t carry much food if you take the bus or ride a bike. Imagine lugging two, three, five bags of food home via bus or bike. You want to carry as much as you can but you don’t have much leeway. Do you take that gallon of milk or not? It’s so heavy. Trade it for a bag of onions? Trade the bag of onions for six jars of baby food?
The decisions poor people have to make in their daily lives are decisions most of us never think about.
