The Morning Must-Read

Yesterday the Washington Post published a front page “news” piece defending President Obama’s Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel (“a force of political reason”), who many — including me — think is giving Obama very, very bad advice. This morning I heard some talking heads say that Emanuel likely invited the WaPo article, in his own defense, and under the guise of “news” as a way of pushing back on that criticism.
This morning I came across this, from Dan Froomkin — Rahm Emanuel: Obama’s Chief of Sabotage — which I believe more accurately assess what’s going on. Froomkin pulls no punches and in my opinion, is absolutely spot on. The final paragraph gives a taste:
To Emanuel, victory is the only thing, and rather than recognize the error of his ways and recalibrate, he is publicly declaring that the now widely-recognized enfeeblement of his boss’s presidency is not his failure, but his vindication. Hail Emanuel triumphant.
Ultimately, the most frustrating and disappointing thing about all this is that Obama is apparently so inexperienced, so dependent on Emanuel, so brainwashed by him, so timid (or so something!) that he hasn’t fired the guy by now. (And at some point, I hope we find out what Obama was thinking when he hired Emanuel in the first place.)
