Christiane Amanpour Leaves CNN — No Reason to Watch Anymore

Christiane Amanpour is moving from CNN to ABC to host “This Week.”

Can’t think of any reason to watch CNN anymore.

Keith Olbermann is Devoting His Entire Show Tonight to His Dad

I feel for Keith Olbermann and the loss of his dad.  I lost both of my parents and a brother in fairly long, difficult, drawn-out ways too so I think I know what he’s going through.  But Keith, enough.  Really.

We’ve all suffered losses.  Many of us would love to have a television show that would allow us to talk about our loved ones but we don’t.  I think it’s unseemly and inappropriate for you to take advantage of your privileged position in that way.

Donate in memory of Keith’s dad here.

All the best.

Take your time, and come back when you can focus on your job.

XO.

David Frum Whines That Republicans Got “Shut-Out” of Health Care Debate

OMG.  David Frum, one of the GOP’s master spinmeisters, was on The Ed Show a few minutes ago.  Ed, Laura Flanders and Frum were discussing whether passing the health reform bill was a “make or break” event for President Obama’s presidency.  Never mind that Obama spent essentially the last year begging and pleading with Republican to add their input to the discussion, Frum appeared to lay down the new Republican mantra:  “It’s going to be a shut-out of Republican views,” and “We’re going to have a Democratic plan, when we could have had a balanced plan.”

Yo, people with short-term memories:  Don’t forget: The Republicans didn’t offer one single idea or proposal about health care reform.  That isn’t Obama’s fault.  He waited and waited, to the immense frustration of some of us.  For the Republicans to whine now about being “shut-out” is just a laughable lie.

Oh, and by the way, I think Frum’s argument will backfire.   People are so sour on “Republican views,” I don’t think they’ll care that they were “shut-out.”  They want action more than they want “bipartisanship.”

As an aside, one of my favorite quotes ever is this one from John Cole at Balloon Juice:

I really don’t understand how bipartisanship is ever going to work when one of the parties is insane.  Imagine trying to negotiate an agreement over dinner plans with your date, and you suggest Italian and she states her preference would be a meal of tire rims and anthrax. If you can figure out a way to split the difference there and find a meal you will both enjoy, you can probably figure out how bipartisanship is going to work in the next few years.

The Clinton/Lewinsky Thing

Gawd.  Chris Matthews interviewed some guy (I was too ticked off to hang around to catch his name) this afternoon who wrote a book about the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal.  They hashed the thing over again, and again, and again.  It was a long interview.

I pledge here and now that for as long as I live, I will change the channel or the dial or whatever the case may be if I ever hear that topic being discussed again.  Four, five years was enough!!!  (SCREAM.)

Bret Baier Interviewing Bush v. His Interruptus Interview of Obama Yesterday

Think Progress has video of Fox’s Bret Baier interviewing kissing George W. Bush’s ass which compares to the interview interruptus he did of President Obama yesterday.

Like night and day, of course.

Hey, Glenn Beck, Invite John Ensign on For a Full Hour

Glenn Beck was salivating at the idea of having Democratic Rep. Eric Massa on his show for a whole hour  a few weeks ago, even though, as we know, Massa didn’t produce the dirt Beck was hoping for.  But hey Glenn, listen up, there’s always Republican Sen. John Ensign.  Looks like he’s in a heap o’ trouble.

Oh, that’s right.  You only slither around in the “scandals” wrought by Democrats, not by Republicans.  Never mind.

From the Uh, Duh File

I would like to know if people in Washington are (1) indescribably arrogant, or (2) if the culture there has been so corrupt for so long that the notion of a conflict of interest doesn’t even enter their mind.

Probably both.

Dodd’s Chief Counsel Bought Financial Stocks During 2008 Crisis:

March 18 (Bloomberg) — Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd’s chief counsel in 2008 traded stock in Morgan Stanley, Wells Fargo & Co., American International Group, Inc., and other rescued companies as the panel considered legislation to address the credit crisis, according to her financial disclosure form filed with the Senate.

Amy Friend, 51, who is now leading the panel’s effort to write a bill overhauling Wall Street regulations, bought $1,000- to-$15,000 stakes in four banks, weeks after Dodd hired her in January 2008, the form shows. She also owned shares of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac,  AIG and other insurance firms, according to the disclosure document, which she signed on June 5, 2009.

(My emphasis.)

Surprise, Surprise: Wellpoint Fails to Keep Its Promise to Help Uninsured

From Think Progress via the Los Angeles Times:

WellPoint Inc. — which recently came under fire for planning double-digit rate hikes in at least eleven states — pledged three years ago to use its charitable foundation to spend $30 million to assist the uninsured receive care.

A new investigative report by the Los Angeles Times finds that WellPoint’s foundation has completely failed to meet its promise of spending $30 million to help the uninsured. Rather, the company spent $6.2 million — a paltry 11 percent of what the company promised.

[...]

An investigation by Congress earlier this year found that WellPoint’s Chief Executive Angela F. Braly had a salary of $1.1 million last year and stock options valuing approximately $8.5 million, meaning that the company couldn’t spend anywhere near what it spends on just one of its own employees to help the uninsured it claims to care about.

My impression is that, in its deal-making over the health care “reform” bill, the White House, unfortunately, has placed a lot of faith and trust in the insurance companies not to do certain things.  For example, yesterday on the Dylan Ratigan show on MSNBC, Michael Moore said that the new bill levies a fine on insurance companies if they drop coverage due to a pre-existing condition. The amount?  $100 a day.  So the rumor that insurance companies can’t drop people due to a pre-existing condition is just that, a rumor.  They can and they will.

This news about Wellpoint is just one example of why these shyster can’t be trusted.  At.  All.

We’ll be hearing stories about people who face treatment that will cost $100,000 who’ve been dropped due to a “pre-existing condition,” but the insurance company figures paying $100 per day is cheaper than shelling out $100,000 — heck, the person could easily be dead before the fine even gets close to $100,000.

I’m going to wait to hear the details but the White House and Democrats may have made a deal with the devil.

Don’t read it if you’re feeling at all depressed, you’ll only feel worse.
