Tweet of the Day
From AironLater
Ah yeah. (But that’s way, way, way too complicated an issue for the Palin zombies.)
Thinking About Those Chilean Miners
I am obsessed with the story about the 33 Chilean miners who are trapped 2,300 feet underground and probably won’t get out for months.
I can’t imagine perpetual darkness and perpetual heat. (I read it’s 84° where they are and of course there’s no breeze and it doesn’t cool down at night. Ugh.) Not only that, Chile is prone to earthquakes so one could go crazy thinking about that alone much less the other unspeakable challenges they face. Like clearing “between 3,000 and 4,000 tons of rock, work that will require crews of about a half-dozen men working in shifts 24 hours a day.”
And then, hopefully, they’ll be rescued but that’s a nightmare in and of itself. “Each man will be pulled up through the 26-inch (66-centimeter) hole in a tube, a ride that will take about an hour each.”
Think about being encased in a 26″ tube for an hour as it’s pulled through solid rock to the surface. My imagination would drive me insane thinking about that: What if the cable that’s pulling the tube breaks?
Per an article I read earlier today, the priority now “is keeping them sane.”
Another ugh.
Anyway, we’re settling into Labor Day weekend here. It’s about 78°. We’re sitting on our backyard deck listening to a neighbor’s rooster crow and a squirrel on the fence crack sunflower seeds. The dogs are keeping an eye on the squirrel and waiting for the Mourning Doves to arrive. They should be here any minute. There’s a very slight breeze.
I’m thinking those miners would give anything to be where I am right now.
Wishing them the best and thinking about them a lot.
At the Food Bank
Back from the food bank. Busy day with lots of clients coming in. They had a great bunch of volunteers there on Wednesday and Thursday so the shelves were well stocked. When lots of clients come through we don’t have time to stock so it’s nice to start the day ahead on that score.
We had wonderful fresh veggies — tomatoes, corn, eggplant, zucchini and carrots as well as fruit like cherries, grapes, plums, apples and bananas.
We gave everyone (who wanted one) a frozen pack of hot dogs to help celebrate Labor Day!
Good Morning
It’s a good morning because I ate a healthful breakfast – a pear and some yogurt with blueberries — instead of what I really wanted — a greasy cheeseburger!
