There are Hoodies and There Are Hoodies

I was watching Melissa Harris-Perry’s show this morning when she made a great point: that there are hoodies and there are hoodies. Some people might think an African-American male wearing a dark sweatshirt-type hoodie on a dark night is a scary thing. But Harris-Perry said this is the kind of hoodie that frightens her:
What Harris-Perry said hit me right between the eyes. I realized I’d been thinking of sweatshirt-type “hoodies.” I realized that ever since the conversation about Trayvon Martin began, all we’ve been talking about is that kind of hoodie. An image of the “hoodies” above hadn’t entered my mind. So thanks Melissa for making me realize that African-American males who wear hoodies don’t have a corner on the market when it comes to “hoodies” frightening people.
