This is very cool:

The winners of HBW World Bird Photo Contest have just been announced. The competition took place from December 7th 2011 to March 26th 2012. It aimed to encourage and disseminate knowledge about birds, while at the same time inspiring creativity in the art of photography. To these ends, the contest’s focus was on photography that is ethical, grounded in the utmost respect for the conservation of birds and their habitats, and without unnecessary digital manipulation.

The contest has been a huge success with more than 12,000 photos submitted by 3,600 photographers, both professional and amateur, from over 128 countries. The images submitted feature more than 3,000 bird species from 154 countries.

The jury has selected 3 winning photos, 10 honourable mentions and 4 special prizes.

This won first prize (out of 12,000 photos – amazing):

A Pelagic Cormorant fishing underwater. (First prize: Cristóbal Serrano, Spain)

And my personal favorite:

Little bee-eaters grouped on a branch. (Best Vox Populi Photo: Kit Day, UK.)
