Why Aren’t Republicans Rallying Around Jahi McMath?

Remember Terri Schiavo?  This is a photo of her before she lapsed into a coma in 1990:

The Terri Schiavo case was a legal struggle involving prolonged life support in the United States that lasted from 1990 to 2005. The issue was whether to carry out the decision of the husband of Teresa Marie “Terri” Schiavo to terminate life support for her. Terri was diagnosed by doctors as being in a persistent vegetative state. The highly publicized and prolonged series of legal challenges presented by her parents and by state and federal legislative intervention effected a seven-year delay before life support finally was terminated.

On February 25, 2005 [15 years after her accident], a Pinellas County judge ordered the removal of Terri Schiavo’s feeding tube. Several appeals and federal government intervention followed, which included U.S. President George W. Bush returning to Washington D.C. to sign legislation designed to keep her alive.

For those of you who don’t remember or who weren’t conscious then, it was an insane time (re-read the last paragraph, above).

Now let’s fast forward.

This is a “before” photo of Jahi McMath, the 13-year-old girl who is in a coma today because of a botched toncillectomy at Children’s Hospital in Oakland, California last month:

Where are the Republicans?  Why isn’t John Boehner calling members of the House back to D.C.?

Wanna know why?  Look at the photos and notice the difference.

She s not in a coma . She has been declared legally brain dead. . The movement that she has is involitary movements which will happen in brain dead patients.

I bet Republicans are saying the following: She’s a black girl from Oakland! What future does she have? Yet another single mother on welfare? Thank God for that doctor. He saved the taxpayers a lot of money! Well, Jahi is a human being and is only 13 years-old! She has a right to live! Don’t tell me Pro-Life only counts if you’re an embryo! God in Heaven is watching His lovely daughter and all her vile enemies.

Recognizing the rhetorical nature of your question: They aren’t rallying around her because they have nothing to gain politically. Just like they don’t really want to overturn Roe v Wade or prevent marriage equality. If their followers get what they want, they’ll stop voting. The scariest threat to the GOP is the tea party, because those folks actually mean it!

    Right, right and right.

She is brain dead people! She does not have a future. When your brain is dead you are dead. Your brain can not start working again. People need to educate themselves. A coma is vastly different, there is the chance for recovery. It is sad but she is already gone!

You make a great point about the difference between in a coma and being brain dead. I shouldn’t have used that word. Next time I’ll be more careful.
