Today — April 18 — in 1906 the Great San Francisco Earthquake occurred, followed by fires throughout the city.  What a horrific day that must have been:

Here’s a very cool site I just came across:  Guardians of the City, which appears to be the work of current and former San Francisco firefighters and/or their friends and families.  They’ve put together an incredible amount of information as to what each and every firefighter did during the four days the city burned.  An unbelievable amount of work went into the site.

The history committee of the GOTC has been researching the actions of the department companies during The Great Earthquake and Fire. Using the fire reports that were submitted by some of the officers, the committee has reviewed and made a timeline of the companies’ actions, the water sources they used, the rescues, and the hardships they endured during the four days of The Fire.

Again, go here to poke around.
