As a former nurse in the Assisted Living community I would like to help make this situation less painful. Knowing you made the right decision is more comforting that you know. Choosing a Nursing Home, or as I like to call it, Assisted Living Home, is not an easy task. When we check our loved ones in, we know it will most likely be the last place they live. There are several things to take into consideration before making a choice like this for your loved one.

When you have made the decision or come to terms with the realization that you can no longer care for that special person, you must then decide which home is best for them. Would you allow your home to be smell so offensive when you walk in the door? I have worked in facilities that make you gasp as you step through the door and also in those that smell pleasant.

Meet the Staff.

Take a moment to introduce yourself to the administrator and his or her office staff. These are some of the people who will be in your loved one’s life. They will make the decision regarding your nursing team and the care plans. It is appropriate to ask why they have chosen this career field. If loving the elderly and wanting to make their end of life process comfortable is not an answer, move on. Take the time to visit the nursing station. Is it manned? Is the phone ringing off the hook? Are the nurses unpleasant or grouchy with staff or residents? With this type of atmosphere, a healthy attitude makes all the difference. Your loved one, no matter their state of mind, will be aware of someone who is inconvenienced by their job.

Get to know the facility.

Some Assisted Living Homes have activities for the residents. Even the least mobile, coherent and disagreeable patient enjoys activities and events. Ask for a calendar of events for the residents. Most centers offer beauty services for their residents. This is something that the administrator would request from local beauty shops or stylists. The extras offered to the residents is also an indication of the care they will receive. Do they offer a movie night? Have a church group that comes in to visit weekly? Offer pet-visit days? The more they work to provide a less-hospital like environment, the better. Your loved one will be hesitant most likely, but these activities will make their transition much easier to cope with. Another thing to be mindful of are the medical service available. Most centers offer a physical therapist or physical therapy services on site. If they do, ask to visit this section. They should happily allow you to explore the facility. Pay attention to the residents as you explore. Are they dressed appropriately? Are they up and out of the rooms being allowed to mingle with other residents or sharing a day room on a nice day?

Narrow your choices.

By this point, you have visited several locations and met several parts of your potential care team. Now take those choices and do your research. Check them with Google, the health department and the BBB.

Make a decision and feel good about your choice.

1 ½ Lbs Fresh Dried Garbanzo Beans (Chick Peas)

32 Ounces Vegetable Stock or Water

2T Sun Dried Tomatoes*, minced

1/3 Cup Tahiti (Sesame Seed Paste)

2 Ounces Fresh Lemon Juice

1 T Roasted Garlic*, puree

1 T Extra Virgin Olive Oil

1 t Sea Salt

*Soak the Sun Dried Tomatoes in warm water for one hour until tender. Remove, pat dry and mince or puree in a food processor. Put aside. *To Make Roasted Garlic: Peel 6 to 8 cloves. Brush or rub with olive oil. Roast in oven at 400 degrees until golden brown. Puree into paste with a little olive oil and put aside one tablespoon. Note: It is always best to roast garlic in bulk either several heads (or bulbs) at a time, or several cloves with or without the skin on. (Store puree with olive oil in a jar with a tight-fitting lid in refrigerator for future use).

Pour Garbanzo Beans out on to a plate and pick out any stones, or discolored Beans, or debris. Place Beans in a bowl with enough water to cover and allow them to soak in refrigerator overnight.1 Cook Beans in Vegetable Stock or Salted Water with just enough liquid to cover 1 ½ to 2 inches. Maintain a slow simmer 1 to 1.5 hours or until beans are just tender. Stain reserving ½ cup of liquid and puree Beans in a food processor using liquid to make a paste the consistency of Peanut Butter. Scrape into bowl and mix remaining ingredients thoroughly into paste. Serve at room temperature with toasted pita triangles, crackers, or crudités (raw vegetables).

The Western genre used to be the most beloved by audiences in Hollywood, and fans came to expect certain things in their Westerns, like desert towns with nice and neat store fronts, cowboys with their shirts tucked in divided into good and bad by the colors of their hats, gun duels in the street, and high-speed horse chases. But they get none of that in this film.

By the time 1971 rolled around, the heyday of Western films had ended, and many who remembered the old dime-a-dozen flicks probably wouldn’t have even considered ‘McCabe and Mrs. Miller’ a true Western, but it’s really just as true as you can get. It’s definitely Robert Altman’s best work, and one of the few films he ever made where he did not use a large, star-studded cast. In this film, he manages to keep the focus on two main characters, portrayed to perfection by Warren Beatty and Julie Christie. The Western town they inhabit isn’t in the hot, dusty desert, but rather high in the mountains where much of the film takes place during a cold, damp winter. The story still has a bit of the old Western flare to it, however, with men clashing over ownership of a bit of land and bullies being sent down after the owner who doesn’t want to give it up.

But it’s not the basic storyline that makes this film great; it’s all of the details. The prostitutes inhabiting the half-finished whorehouse look nothing like the shapely saloon girls that most Westerns portray, all made up and wearing colorful corset tops. These girls come in all shapes in sizes, with unkempt hair that shows how they spend most of their nights and faces that are probably as close to what the real thing was like as you can get. Even Julie Christie, who plays the madam, doesn’t wear makeup or do anything to tame her frizzy mane, and she’s not too proud to turn a trick herself, for a much higher price, of course.

The town itself is imperfect. Things are being used that aren’t quite finished; everything is dirty; and lumber is scattered about the streets. It makes a great setting for the characters that inhabit it, however, like that of Warren Beatty, a lucky man who gains a position of power. Instead of a cowboy hat and duster coat, he sports a big furry bearskin and bowler hat, likes to brag, and may or may not be a great gunman.

So if you want to see a real Western, you must see this film. It may not be the West that Hollywood dreamed of years before, but it’s the only film I’ve ever seen made that actually tries to get it right.
